After a moment of watching my reflection in wide-eyed horror, I crept back up to the mirror, opening my mouth again. All normal. I felt along my gums with my finger tips. No second layer of teeth. No fangs.
I'm normal, I thought to myself. I'm a normal human girl. Normal. It was just my imagination.
Soon enough, I found myself wandering the house, and found myself entering baby Jake's crib room. I froze at the door way. There was a woman in a black dress staring down into the crib. I think you all know who she is. Her hair was long and flowing, a mix between blonde and red and black and brown. I slipped silently out of the room, snatched Great Grand Dad's WWII rifle, from above the fire place. Walked back into the room, pointed it at the back of her head, as she reached down into my baby donu- brother's crib, and without hesitation I pulled the trigger.
Of course Great Grand Dad's WWII rifle was not loaded, nor functional. And I knew better than to think it was. Still, driven by instincts I didn't understand, those were the things that I did, and somehow...

The rifle kicked back in my hands as it fired with a deafening roar of exploding gun powder. The force of it knocked me back onto my butt. Dropping the rifle, I leapt to my feet and charged the crib, relieved to find Jake wailing madly, as he stared up at the exploded head of the strange dead woman now hanging over the wall of his crib. Her brain bits were blubbery and green, and seemed to kinda glow in the dark.
"MOM!!!" I called out, followed by "DAD!!!" Though I hadn't needed to.
They each entered the room on command, one after the other. Eyes wide and silly terrified expressions on their faces, mimicking my own.
"What happened!" Mom says entering the room.
"I shot her!" I explained speaking so fast I could barely hear myself. "She was trying to do something to Donut and I shot her!"
They each crept up to the crib and peered in at the strange sight of the dead woman with the glowing green blobby brain bits that for the most part illuminated the room.
"She's some kinda monster, see!?"

Dad leaned over me carefully. I was terrified he was about to tell us that this was our Aunt Sally who'd come over to visit for a few days, and that she had glowy brain bits because of a medical condition, but instead he just kissed me on the forehead, and rubbed my hair and said: "You did good, honey."
I grinned.
"Um, think we should call the police?" Mom ventured.
"I dunno..." Dad answered, caution in his voice. "I don't suppose it's illegal to shoot an intruding monster in your home...that being said...I'd hate to be wrong about that."
"We could always bury her in the backyard?" I chimed in.
My parents stared at me for a bit, and then shrugged.

A few hours later, my biological mother had been buried in our back yard next to the rose bushes.
A week later and our new neighbor who I came to know as "Uncle Chuck" had installed a new state of the art home security system in our house.
I spent a lot of the time, after that, out of the house playing with friends, avoiding baby Jake (or "Donut" as we had come to start calling him) at all costs. Until one day he got a little bigger, and seemed far less delicious to me.
And sooner or later...we all forgot the whole thing had ever happened.
